Sometimes it happens that we stop wearing a thing because of a broken hardware or a single speck, but in a very visible place. It would seem that the fabric is still good, but what can you do. Of course, the lock can be replaced in the nearest atelier, and rivet buttons can be bought there.

But if the matter is in the hole that has formed or the thing has sat down strongly after washing, they will not help in the studio.
But not always in a hurry to throw away unnecessary clothes. For example, an excellent children's dress can come out of women's linen trousers. It is sewn quite simply. The pattern is built in just a few measures (waist circumference, product length from the waist).

Preliminary preparation

First you need to wash and iron the trousers. Then spread on the inner step seam.

If we cut off the upper part (where pockets and zippers are sewn), we get two relatively even cloths with a seam in the middle.

There is no need to dissolve it, we will cut the product so that it still serves.
Building patterns
It is quite simple. In the usual case, it could be drawn directly onto the fabric. But we do not cover it on a flat canvas, but on a previously used one, therefore it is more convenient to work with a paper pattern.

Before

Width below = waist circumference + 2 cm. We do the height and width of the upper part as desired, measuring on the child from the waist line up. Side seam to the armhole = about 5 cm. This is for a child about 110 cm tall. We draw the armhole line with an arc, smoothly connecting the side seam to the top of the product.

Back

Constructed in a similar way. The height and width of the upper edge are measured individually on the child.

Skirt

This part is the same for the front and back. Width = waist circumference + 2 cm. Part height = product length + 2 cm (for bottom processing).
For patterns, you can use any paper, even old newspapers. Or glue together several sheets of A4 white paper.

Cut

1. We attach a paper pattern to the wrong side so that the middle of the part coincides with the seam on the fabric. You can cut the upper part as a unit with the skirt.

But at the same time, you need to see if there are scuffs on the front side in this place. If there are problems with the fabric, the skirt will have to be cut separately, and then sew on to the details of the front and back.
2. We pin the paper pattern with tailor's pins. Draw it with a pencil or soap if the fabric is dark. We mark allowances for seams of 1 cm. Cut.

3. We received the finished part front and back.

4. From the remaining fabric we cut out the straps.

We measure their length on the child. Width about 2.5 cm. The edge at the point of sewing to the back is slightly expandable. In this case, two shoulder straps in width should correspond to the width of the top of the back.

Sewing

Starting sewing, you should first purchase a ready-made oblique trim in the store or cut it out from the remnants of the fabric.
  • The front and back parts are folded with the front sides inwards. We seam the seams with tailor's pins.

    Laying the machine line.

We process the seams (overlock or zigzag).
  • Straps are treated with an oblique inlay and we are sewn to the top of the back part with a seam.
  • The armholes of the front and back, the upper edge of the front is also treated with a slanting inlay. To do this, fold it in half, pin tailor pins to the edge of the fabric and lay the machine line.
  • We sew buttons on the straps, and in the corners of the front part we sew loops.
  • We process the bottom of the product. This may not be necessary if, when cutting, the bottom of the skirt coincided with the previously processed bottom of the old trousers.

Sundress is ready!
Do-it-yourself children's sundress is quite simple to do, the work does not require special knowledge and does not take much time. In it, the child will be comfortable and not hot in the summer heat.

Tip

A similar thing can be made from old jeans. Then the sundress will be perfectly combined with a turtleneck or a light sweater. Ideal for spring or kindergarten. In addition, a children's sundress from old jeans will allow you to give your beloved thing a second life and save money.
It is also a good option for beginner dressmakers. A simple pattern is built in a few minutes, cutting and sewing does not require special skills. Every mother can do such a thing, and the child will be very happy with an unexpected new thing.
